The Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) is part of the Hong Kong Government’s infrastructure programme to improve the water quality in Victoria Harbour. RUC Cementation Mining Contractors were awarded the shaft sinking contract for the series of four production shafts and associated infrastructure required for the project. Wilshaw provided the engineering design and drafting services for RUC Cementation Mining Contractors to carry out the shaft sinking operation.  The shafts varied from 8.0m diameter to 11.6m diameter and the shaft depths were between 152 to 180m.

Wilshaw's design work included:-

  • Headframe suitable for sinking with a 10 Tonne kibble and then utilising a skip for the tunnelling phase.
  • 10 Tonne kibble.
  • Emergency Egress ladder way  .                
  • Personnel shaft conveyance.
  • Shaft Buntons to support services and crosshead/skip guides.
  • 2 Deck Sinking Stage for the various shaft diameters.
  • Collar steelwork to support the headframe and stage winders.
